Change a business name
Apply to change the business name(s) of a registered establishment.
The business name(s) of a registered establishment are what it operates or trades under. It can be the same or different to the registered establishment's name. There can also be one or more business name(s).
A registered establishment's business name(s) must be the same as what’s in the Australian Business Register, opens in a new tab (ABR). The ABR stores business and organisation details. These details are how your business is registered with the Australian Government.
In the Export Service, the registered establishment name is the same as the entity name shown in the ABR. To apply to change your registered establishment’s business name(s):
- Sign in to your Export Service account.
- Under ‘Your linked businesses’ select the business name.
- In the side menu, select ‘Establishments’.
- Under ‘Your establishments’, select the establishment name.
- Under ‘Contact details’, go to 'Alternative business names' and select ‘Change’.
- Select ‘Remove’ next to the business name(s). Or select ‘Add alternative business name’ to add one or more new names.
- Follow the prompts to submit your application.
We’ll review your application as soon as we can. We’ll let you know if we can approve it in email.
Register a new business name
If you want to update your registered establishment’s business name to something different to the ABR, you will need to register it with the Australian Government.
You can do this with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). However, you can’t change a registered business name with ASIC.
If you want to trade under a different business name, you will need to register the new one and cancel the old one. Name changes made by ASIC will update the ABR automatically.
You will need to do this before you change a registered establishment’s business name with us. For more information, go to How to update business name details, opens in a new tab.
