How long does it take to assess my application?

Find out the timeframe for a decision on an application for a registered establishment.

  • Application
  • Establishment

We're legislated under the Export Control Act 2020, opens in a new tab to decide on applications within 120 days.

This applies to all applications to register, make changes to, or revoke an establishment registration.

Other factors that affect how long it takes

Within the 120-day period, one or more people who regulate your type of goods may need to approve your application. This is separate from any decisions an auditor may need to make.

The 120-day timeframe only includes the days the application is with the department for action.

If we're waiting on more information or supporting documents from a registered establishment, the time it takes to receive them is not included in the 120 days.

Average processing time

We aim to complete all applications as quickly as possible. The average application processing timeframe is 8 to 12 weeks.

Application processing times depend on:

  • the type of application
  • the number and range of commodities
  • overseas requests due to importing country requirements and the time it takes for the importing country to approve our recommendations
  • staffing resources and the number of requests.
